About JAPAN ESSENCE
Japan is often summed up in a handful of familiar images. Its deeper character, though, lives in quieter places: a river pool where a kappa is said to lurk, a stone tied to a nine-tailed fox, a guardian face on a temple roof, a craft still shaped by hand.
JAPAN ESSENCE is an independent English-language journal that brings these stories to readers around the world. We are based in Kyoto, but our subject is all of Japan, from Hokkaido to Okinawa, and from mountain shrines to coastal villages.
What you’ll find here
Our flagship series, Legends of Japan, follows one regional legend at a time, links it to a real place you can visit, and ends with a practical guide to visiting. Alongside it we write about Zen and spirituality, crafts and kawara (Japanese roof tiles and onigawara), Kyoto, travel by region, food, nature and the seasons, and history and culture.
One theme, one article
Each article focuses on a single subject, whether a legend, a garden, a dish or a craft. We give it the time and space it deserves, and hope that, read one at a time, these stories add up to a fuller picture of Japan.
Sourced, with fact and legend kept apart
Legends deserve to be told well, and told honestly. In every story we separate what tradition says from what historical records and official sources show, and we list our sources at the end of the article. When scholars disagree or a detail is uncertain, we say so. You can read more in our Editorial Policy.
An independent voice
JAPAN ESSENCE is an editorial site. We write about what we find meaningful, and when we visit a place or feature a maker, we tell their story rather than sell it.
Thank you for visiting. Take your time, and begin wherever your curiosity leads.
